Webinar 1: New Rules for Parenting in Digital Age

Overview
Digital media have become an essential part of young people’s lives. While digital media offer unprecedented opportunities for children and teenagers to learn new things and connect with others, their overdependence on digital media have raised various concerns among parents. This talk will discuss how young people use digital media and engage in risk-taking behaviours and how parents can effectively guide their children living in the constantly changing media environment.

Bio
Dr Wonsun Shin is Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head in Media and Communications at the University of Melbourne in Australia. She has extensive research experience in youth, digital media, and parenting, with a focus on the roles played by parents in children’s acquisition of knowledge and skills relevant to their functioning as media users and consumers. She has received multiple research awards and recognitions from renowned international academic organisations. She serves on the Editorial Review Boards of the Journal of Advertising and the International Journal of Advertising.

Parents want to raise healthy kids, but they need a holistic strategy that addresses the whole child – one that truly nourishes, inside and out. Blending her powerful story and her experiences as a pediatric dietitian of over 29 years, Castle challenges audiences to shift their focus from food solutions to a modern whole-child approach, including the interaction of food, feeding and childhood development. Attendees will learn a strategic approach to child health while learning practical ways to build healthy meals and snacks, effectively interact with children while feeding them, and support their learning and independence with eating.

Jill Castle is one of the nation’s premier childhood nutrition experts. Known as a paradigm shifter who blends current research, practical application and common sense, Jill inspires audiences to think differently about feeding kids. A sought-after speaker, advisor, and media contributor, Jill has inspired TEDx and a range of nutrition, medical, government and parent audiences. Jill serves on the Board of Advisors of Parents Magazine and is the nutrition advisor to a handful of privately held child nutrition companies. She is the creator of TheNourishedChild.com, a parent nutrition education website and author of the books, Eat Like a Champion, Try New Food, The Smart Mom’s Guide to Starting Solids, and co-author of Fearless Feeding.

Dr Anisha Abraham is a pediatrician, teen health specialist, public health researcher, parent of two boys, and author of the book “Raising Global Teens”. Over the last 25 years she has lived with her family and worked in the US, Asia and Europe. She is currently based in Washington DC and on faculty at Georgetown University Hospital. Her passion is helping kids especially those with a cross-cultural background to thrive.
