International Baccalaureate Diploma Courses

senior summer club

All our IB Diploma summer courses are written and taught by highly qualified and experienced IB Diploma teachers. The courses are designed to prepare students for the academically demanding IB Diploma Programme (DP) or the rigorous IB Diploma Course programme (DC). These courses are ideal for students who are looking for some extra support or wish to brush up on subject-specific skills. For some students, attendance and satisfactory completion of IB Diploma summer courses form one of the conditions required by ISS to gain entry into the IB Diploma Programme or IB Diploma Course programme in Grade 11.

Pre-IB Skills:
This summer school course will teach you how to get organized and work efficiently during the IB Diploma Program. The first section focuses on skills such as listening, note taking and reading efficiently as well as referencing consistently and correctly. The second section's emphasis is on producing a clearly defined thesis statement, which will then culminate in a research project using the skills, listed. You will prepare a presentation and examine different styles of IB essays.

Pre-IB Mathematics:
Students in this course will review and study many of the topics found in the Presumed Knowledge part of the IB Diploma Mathematics Standard Level (SL) curriculum. This will include skills in Algebra, Trigonometry, Functions, and Statistics. This course was developed in 2012 and is specifically aimed at students entering the IB Diploma or IB Diploma Course Programme.

Pre-IB Business & Management:
Business & Management is a rigorous and dynamic discipline that examines business decision-making and how this impacts on internal and external environments. By taking Pre-IBDP Business & Management, students will gain a sound introductory understanding of business theory and begin to apply business principles, practices and skills. Students will also develop the ability to explore business issues from a consumer and organization's point of view.

Pre-IB English Language & Literature:
Students will be introduced to a range of both literary and non-literary texts from different periods, styles and genres providing an opportunity to recognize the importance of context in which texts are written. Students will write in a number of styles based on language and media topics. In addition, students will participate in oral presentations on a range of themes, in order to improve upon their powers of expression and to demonstrate their ability to approach a task from different perspectives.

Pre-IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK):
Theory of Knowledge is a compulsory component of both the IB Diploma and the IB Diploma Course programmes. The Pre-IB TOK course will introduce students to the Areas of Knowledge and Ways of Knowing that form part of the TOK course. Students will be encouraged to develop their own ideas critically, as well as those of others and to consider knowledge issues from different perspectives. Finally, the Pre-IB TOK course is designed to take students out of their intellectual ‘comfort zone’!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When will Summer School start?

Summer School commences on the 1st of July and goes through until the 26th of July 2013. The IB program starts on the 22nd and runs until the 26th of July.

Summer Club classes start at 09:00 – 12:30, and then at 13:15 – 15:15 for the afternoon sessions (except for Adventure Sports and Singapore through a Camera). IB classes run from 09:00 – 12:00 and then 13:00 – 16:00 for afternoon sessions. Please check carefully to see what time your classes run.

2. What do the children do for lunch, if they are enrolled for the full day?

All lunch times and breaks are supervised by teachers. Students enrolled in Elementary and Junior classes all day can either bring their own lunches (which can be stored in class refrigerators and micro waved if necessary) or buy from the canteen. A form will be given to each registered kinder student before summer school starts. Students in the Senior Club may go out to purchase their lunches from a nearby café (off campus) but must make their way back to school by 13:15 for the afternoon session.

3. What if there is an accident or my child gets sick?

We have a school nurse on hand during summer school. But please ensure you have provided us with contact numbers of a parent/guardian as well as one other person we can contact if we cannot reach that person.

4. When should I enrol my child/ myself for Summer School?

As soon as possible, in order to secure a place. Preferably in April and May as some classes have a maximum enrollment. You will receive an email confirming the  registration of your child(children) once we receive your payment. Payment secures your place, not the registration. If you need an invoice you will need to ask for one by email. If your class is cancelled we will inform you soon enough so you can either choose another class or get your money back.

5. Am I allowed to register for one week or three weeks?

This will depend on the enrolments of other students. We reserve the right to admit for part sessions on a strictly case-by-case basis. We charge 60% of the regular price for one week.

6. What do I need to bring for Summer School? Will food and snacks be provided?

All main stationery or class materials will be provided  but you might like to bring along a pencil case or note pad to academic classes. Students in recreational classes are asked to dress appropriately (i.e. sports shoes for sports courses). We do NOT provide morning snacks (so you need to pack it yourself) but we use the service of a food company for lunch. If you request that service we will send you the form.  If you do not use our food service company please ensure you pack a nutritious and adequate lunch.

7. What happens if my child needs to go in a different class/level/age?

For some academic courses we may move some students to a different age or level group based on their level. We only move children if they are likely to gain more . Please contact the summer school director directly about this if you have a concern.

8. Where do I submit the applications forms & cheque to? Can I pay by cash, telegraphic transfer or credit card?

Credit card and check are accepted at the Paterson campus but not cash payments. If you would like to pay by direct credit/bank transfer, please contact the Summer School Director: sumsch13@iss.edu.sg for details on how to do this. American Express payment can also be done.
