Literacy Week is where we celebrate our literacy learning through immersing our Paterson campus students in a number of literacy related activities, such as book swaps, author visits, and this year, the development of an ISS cookbook, “Cooked Up Stories”! Students submitted their self-written story-recipes for “Cooked Up Stories”, which will be available for purchase later in the school year.

During Literacy Week, our Elementary School students had the chance to meet and learn from published authors, one of whom topped the bestseller list in Singapore, while our Middle School students were risk-takers, reading to our Elementary School students in both English and their Mother Tongue. We closed the week with a “Book Character Parade”, with students and teachers dressing up as their favourite book characters – a big congratulations to Grade 5.2 for winning the title of “Best Dressed Class”!

Reading is an integral part of becoming a proficient communicator. It immerses our learners in new vocabulary which is essential for acquiring the language skills necessary for fluent communication. As our students grow and develop, reading together enables mindful participation in discussions in which ideas are articulated and shared. Involving the whole school community in reading and listening to stories in different languages contributes to encouraging empathy and tolerance of others.

Our students are empowered by authentic writing opportunities that enable them to tell their own stories, and describe and interpret their world. Seeing their own writing in print is an empowering experience which contributes to our students realising their own potential as Global Citizens of the future.
