Wakana Ikeda (Class of 2025) left a lasting impression on the ISS International School community. Known for her musical talents and academic dedication, Wakana’s six-year journey is a powerful testament to the value of perseverance, community, and personal growth.
A Foundation Built in the IB Middle Years
Wakana joined ISS in Grade 7, beginning her journey in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). Coming directly from the national education system in Japan, she was immediately drawn to the school’s “small-by-design” international environment. The personalised setting empowered her to develop her English language skills rapidly while building deep, meaningful connections with her peers and mentors.
“The strong and close connections between students and teachers are something unique to ISS. I had great teachers and wonderful friends that I don’t think I could have had elsewhere.”, said Wakana.
Growth Through Global Perspectives
Wakana credits the diverse ISS community for shaping her into a globally minded individual. She reflects on how engaging with different perspectives in the classroom helped her grow as an open-minded learner—a core value of the IB philosophy.
She specifically highlights the unwavering support of her teachers during challenging times. Her Japanese teacher, Ms. Akiko, remained one of her biggest supporters. Ms. Akiko’s positive energy and passion for education motivated Wakana to strive for excellence in all her pursuits.
Memories Beyond the Classroom
Over her six years at ISS, Wakana’s education extended far beyond the classroom. A major highlight was her Week Without Walls trip to Bintan. Applying the “Service as Action” principles she learned in MYP, Wakana helped build a hygienic water tank system for a local community. This hands-on experience deepened her sense of social responsibility and strengthened her bonds with her classmates in a real-world context.
The Future: Ethics, Media, and AI
As she moves forward, Wakana is set to explore the cutting edge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Media. She is particularly passionate about the ethical dimensions of emerging technologies, hoping to contribute to the positive and responsible advancement of AI in the future.
Advice for Future IB Students
Reflecting on her success in the rigorous IB Diploma Programme, Wakana offers a heartfelt piece of advice for those following in her footsteps:
“The secret to surviving the IB is balance! While academics are incredibly important, remember to have fun with your friends and create memories because friendship and memories are what will stay with you forever.”
