After graduating in 2016, Riku studied economics at Keio University in Japan, focusing on econometrics and data science. Today, Riku is part of Tektome, a Japanese startup developing practical AI solutions for the architecture, engineering and construction industries. In his role, he collaborates with engineers from around the world to develop solutions that are both effective and responsible.
But his journey was far from smooth sailing.
When Riku joined ISS in 2012, he arrived with little English and found it difficult to follow conversations. He gradually found his confidence and began to thrive with the support of his teachers, and the wider ISS community,
Looking back on his time at ISS, Riku is especially grateful to the teachers who supported him along the way.
“I am thankful to all the teachers who supported me, but I would especially like to thank Ms Edwards and Mr Whitehead. They took the time to understand what I was struggling with. Their support gave me the foundation to strengthen my English, while encouraging me to step outside my comfort zone through service-learning. These experiences continue to shape how I approach new challenges today.”
To current students at ISS:
“The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) can be academically demanding, but I encourage you to try for extracurricular activities and service-learning too. It was right to try something that seemed unfamiliar or to take on a responsibility. These experiences give you opportunities to contribute to others while learning about yourself. They also help you develop practical judgement: a feel for what works, what does not, and how to adapt when things do not go as planned. I feel that this type of learning will stay with you long after school.”
