I have enjoyed teaching and leadership positions in public, private and international schools across Australia, UK and Singapore. I actively try to educate to make a difference, and I look forward to working with our wonderful community as Academic Director of Teaching and Learning (K-12).

Fiona Edwards

Academic Director of Pastoral (K-12), Head of EAL (K-12)

Bachelor of Education (English, Bahasa Indonesia)

From a young age I lived in Indonesia and Brunei and experienced Singapore’s urban jungle in my teens. I finished high school and university in Perth, and at first found it difficult to reconcile my new Australian identity. My connection to Asia and my exposure to expat life made a Bachelor of Education in English and Bahasa Indonesia from Curtin University a natural choice. After 8 successful and fulfilling years teaching Bahasa at Perth College, an Anglican girl’s school, it was time for a change of scenery again to feed my travel bug! I spent the next 18 months travelling Asia and Europe, and living and teaching in the UK.

My next and current adventure took me back to South East Asia and ISS International School. It has been wonderful reminiscing about old school days with current students. Being able to give back to and be part of an international school community again has been extremely rewarding!

Christopher Soon Jun Zuo

MYP English Acquisition & MYP EAL Support

Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistic (TESOL)
Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature with Film Studies (Merit)
Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics (TESOL)

I was born in Malacca, Malaysia to parents who were both qualified English teachers. I began teaching 7 years ago. One of my first teaching jobs was at a tuition centre catering to students studying the international syllabus. It was here that I taught English language and English Literature to students from all over the world, helping them to prepare for the IGCSE and IB exams. I spent another 2 years teaching the local Singapore GCE English syllabus at a local tuition centre, and taught at the Singapore Korean International School where I helped students prepare for the SAT and TESOL exams.

My philosophy to teaching is simply made up of 2 things: make things simple and make things manageable. I believe that learning is a journey of discovery, especially for the young. I also believe that education is critical in a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected and global. Modernisation has blurred the lines of nation, race and culture, bringing with it both dangers and opportunities. It is thus critical that the young of today are prepared to face a world very different for yesteryear.

Cynthia Gian

MYP Science, DP Biology and Chemistry

Bachelor Of Science (Biological Sciences)
Bachelors Of Biomedical Science (Honours)
Master Of Teaching (Secondary) - Biology and Chemistry

I was born in Singapore, and spent 8 years living and working in Australia, before coming back to Singapore to teach for ISS International School.

After studying and working in the Science industry on various research projects, I felt a lack of impact and satisfaction in the work that I was doing – there was a lack of human interactions! I started looking for another industry in which I could carry on my passion in Science, and decided that teaching was an excellent way that I could marry my love for Science, inspire and educate the next generation, while still having plenty of human interactions. I started my teaching career in Australia, with experience in both IB and the Australian Curriculum during my Masters, as well as teaching Science and Biology as a qualified teacher once I graduated.

I believe and am committed to fostering positive teacher-student relationships through my teaching and learning practices in order to increase student engagement, and will continue to do so at ISS International School.

Ho Kit Ying

HS EAL Specialist

Post-Graduate Diploma in Education - English as a Second Language
Bachelor of Arts (Honours) English for Professional Communication (Minor: Spanish Studies)

Having completed my Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and being a registered teacher in Hong Kong, I have gained valuable experience teaching English as a second language in two different local secondary schools. These three years of teaching experience honed my skills in effectively engaging students and creating an inclusive learning environment.

My journey then took me to Germany, where I immersed myself in the language and culture while working as an English teacher in a bilingual kindergarten and primary school aftercare program. This opportunity allowed me to broaden my perspective on early education and parenting, leading me to publish a book on German early education practices.

Having learned multiple foreign languages myself, I understand firsthand the struggles and triumphs that accompany language acquisition. This personal experience fuels my empathy and allows me to relate to the challenges faced by English language learners.

Joining the ISS family, I aim to empower students to become confident, lifelong learners and global citizens.

With a diverse range of interests, I find immense joy as an international school teacher. In my classroom, I foster a dynamic and engaging learning environment, encouraging students to explore beyond the walls of the classroom. Embodying international mindedness, I embark on fascinating adventures in the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra and connect with refugees, participating in conferences in Luxembourg and Bali to foster understanding and unity.

MYP and DP Music

Master of Music in Performance and Literature
Bachelor of Music
Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers and Trainers (CIDTT)

Born in the vibrant city of Chicago, music flowed through my veins thanks to my Korean parents. While excelling in the scientific realm at the University of Michigan, my heart yearned for the art of music. Specialising in piano under Dr. Blythe Owen and Zeyda Suzuki, yet my soul found its true resonance with the cello’s haunting melodies. Salzburg, Austria, beckoned me, where I immersed myself in the renowned Mozarteum, collaborating with exceptional soloists and chamber musicians, leaving a trail of mesmerised audiences across Europe.

Beyond the confines of traditional notation, I embarked on an audacious journey into jazz and Baroque improvisation, relentlessly pushing the boundaries of my artistry. As a mentor, I’ve had the privilege to inspire students from diverse backgrounds, from the United States to Europe and Southeast Asia. The International Baccalaureate (IB) music program, with its celebration of diverse cultures and genres, deeply resonates with my soul.

Now, as a music teacher at ISS, I am thrilled to cultivate a thriving musical culture and ignite the creative flame in every student, helping them discover and nurture their unique artistic voice. Together, we shall paint the world with the colours of symphonies and unlock the limitless potential of musical expression.

HS Subject Coordinator - Language B, MYP English Language Acquisition, DP and HSD English Language B, Personal Project Coordinator

Bachelors Of Arts (English and American Literature)
Master Of Art (English Education)

I was born in Japan and had English education there; however, I had opportunities to live in Switzerland and Canada before I started my life in Singapore. When I first came to this lovely and lively country in 2016 with my husband and daughters, I joined The Japanese School Singapore and taught English Language to elementary school students for three years, as HOD of English. My philosophy of teaching, with my long-time experience of teaching ESL to students from elementary school to university has been the same; and it is that “Students show the biggest improvement in their language acquisition when they are interested or having fun.” I love to see students’ improvement, especially when I see the students who struggled in the beginning could flourish their English skills after they made steady efforts. Language is language – it is useful only when you use it. I am looking forward to teaching ISS students and to seeing their effort fruit.
